Adam Cast Forth
by Jorge Luis Borges
    (transl. by Richard Eberhart)

Was there a garden or was the garden a dream?
I ask myself, slowly in the evening light,
Almost for consolation, without delight,
If that past was real or if it only seems
Real to me now in misery, an illusion?
No more than a magical show
Of a god I do not know
But dreamed, and that Paradise, vague now, delusion?
But I know that Paradise will be
Even if it does not exist for me.
The warring incest of Cains and Abels is the tough earth's way
Of punishing me. Yet it is a good thing to have known of
Happiness and to have touched love,
The living garden, even if only for a day.
